Penn as fair in the courtroom, kind, compassionate, understanding, and a good man who treated everyone with dignity and respect. Shelton C. Penn graduated from high school in 1942, attended Morehouse College, was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1944-1946 and returned to Morehouse to graduate in 1948 (his schoolmate was Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.). Judge Penn graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1951, set up a private practice in Battle Creek, Michigan and went on to an illustrious career in law that included chief assistant prosecuting attorney, civil rights hearing referee and chief judge of the 10th district court. This fund, established in memory of Judge Penn by his wife, Sadie Penn in 2009, is a testament to their belief in education and community. This fund was established for the purpose of providing scholarships to Calhoun County residents who are students entering the University of Michigan Law School to pursue a career in law. Eligible applicants shall be gsraduates or graduating seniors from Calhoun County private, public, parochial, charter school systems or home school. Graduate students must have at least the minimum required grade point average for acceptance into the University of Michigan Law School. The Shelton C. Penn Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to graduates or graduating seniors, who at the time the scholarship is awarded, are planning to attend the University of Michigan Law School. Considerations are the applicant(s) potential for academic success, service to their community, church involvement and evidence the applicant has been thoughtful and thorough in planning their life path/future.

Eligible applicants shall be Battle Creek Public Schools graduating seniors who attended elementary (Valley View Elementary) and/or middle school (Springfield Middle School) in Springfield, Michigan. Prior recipients can renew award for one year. Recipient must maintain a 2.0 GPA, as verified through a Kellogg Community College transcript, to receive renewable award.

This fund, established in 2009 by friends and colleagues, is a tribute to the life of Kathy Petrich. Kathy Petrich taught for twelve years as Director of Choral Activities for Marshall Public Schools. Prior to teaching in Marshall, she taught for five years in River Rouge, and one year in New Hampshire. Her high school groups consistently earned first division ratings, not only in Michigan, but in national and international competitions, as well. Eligible applicants shall be graduating seniors of Marshall High School who will be pursuing a degree in music. Selection criteria are: applicants who have participated in music (choir, band or orchestra) throughout their high school career, have maintained good grades, and have received recommendations from Marshall High School teachers. Eligible applicants are graduating seniors of Harper Creek High School who will be attending Kellogg Community College and can demonstrate some financial need. Considerations are: no specific grade point is required however, the applicant should possess the characteristics of someone who is working hard on their academics, taking hard classes but not necessarily a straight ?A? student. Students who meet eligibility as described and play soccer will be given special consideration.

To honor the life and legacy of Ronald Clark "Ron" McDaniel, family and friends established the Ronald Clark McDaniel Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2008. Ron, born in Harlan, Kentucky, moved to Battle Creek, Michigan at the age of 5. He was involved in the National Honor Society, Boys State, played baseball and football and graduated in the top ten of his class at Pennfield High School. He then served in the United States Air Force obtaining presidential awards and honors before he made his home back in Battle Creek. Ron managed to balance his commitment and love for his family and sports while exhibiting an unequaled work ethic, often working 7 days a week, at the same company for 38 years. This fund was established to carry on his value of education. He believed that all young adults should participate in extra-curricular activities in or outside of school while focusing on education. Most of all Ron McDaniel believed education was the key to success. Scholarships in memory of Ron will be awarded to graduating seniors who have participated in high school athletics and are seeking educational opportunities in teaching/education. Eligible candidates shall be graduating seniors from any public school within the greater Battle Creek area who have participated in a minimum of one varsity sport for at least two years of their high school career who will be seeking education at a 2 or 4 year college or university in the field of teaching/education. Graduating seniors must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater. Financial need may also be considered. Applicant should demonstrate active involvement in his/her high school and service to their community.

This scholarship was established for the purpose of providing a scholarship to an outstanding African American senior from Battle Creek Central High School who has chosen to pursue higher education and has a 3.0 GPA or higher.

J.K. was a talented auto mechanic. This scholarship will benefit individuals obtaining certification as an auto mechanic, an opportunity J.K. never had due to lack of funds. Eligible candidates should be passionate about and persevere towards their educational goals while maintaining high academic standards.

Eligible applicants must have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA. Considerations are: demonstration of being a "team player" by participation in team sports, extracurricular activities and/or in their relationships with friends, family and community, demonstrated actions that support an anti-drinking and other positive lifestyle behaviors. Jacqueline Pieper has provided scholarships to students with potential but who needed economic assistance to continue their education. Eligible applicants shall be graduating seniors or graduates of a public or private high school of the Battle Creek area or have obtained a GED. Applicants must be planning to enroll at a two or four year college or university or trade school or similar learning institution. Financial need is the most critical consideration. Preference will be given to residents or former residents of the Lakeview School District. Special consideration shall also be given to former students of Jacqueline Pieper or their children.

The Kellogg Company-Tony McGee Scholarship is specifically to support scholarships for minority students who seek educational opportunities beyond high school. Priority consideration will be given first to historically black colleges, second to four year Michigan colleges and third to Kellogg Community College. Scholarship candidates shall be minority graduating seniors of Battle Creek Central High School with a 2.8 GPA or higher. Considerations are: financial need and academic achievement. Steven P. Straub, "Straubie" was a 1981 graduate of Lakeview High School, former Jr. Varsity Football Coach, Assistant Track Coach and In-House Suspension Supervisor. He played four years of basketball and football, three years of track and one year of baseball at Lakeview High School. Steve loved all sports and made many friends while participating. He understood the importance of teamwork and savored the thrill of competition. Steve was compassionate, loving and fun, and known for his infectionus smile. In Steve's memory, his family, co-workers and friends established this fund to provide annual scholarships (up to two) for Sports Camps for high school students. Because of his love for sports, the scholarships are open to all who are interested and in any sport sponsored by Lakeview High School. Scholarships are for those students who wish to improve their sport skills during the summer months by attending a sports camp, but have a need for financial assistance. Students must be in grades 8 through 11 and live in the Lakeview School District, attending Lakeview Schools. The purpose of this fund is to provide scholarships to Lakeview High School graduating seniors intending to study music at a post-secondary level. Scholarships may also be available to Lakeview High School students who will be attending Interlochen Center for the Arts High School Summer Music Camp programs. Eligible candidates will be graduating seniors of Lakeview High School. First preference will be given to graduating seniors intending to study/major in music which may include vocal or instrumental. This scholarship was established to honor Al Leibert, a coach, teacher and former principal, his career and love of sports. Eligible applicants are graduating seniors of Battle Creek Central High School who played football throughout their entire high school career. The recipent is selected based on demonstration of good character, citizenship and good academic standing.

George Byelich was a sports enthusiast and avid supporter of the Lakeview Schools sports programs, with a keen interest in youth. In his quiet way, he helped hundreds of students develop their sport interests and talents. This scholarship is to be used for the younger student who financially could not otherwise participate in a structured summer sports program, or for the student who needs special financial assistance in other ways relating to sports during the school year. In doing so, it is hoped the student will benefit in morale, citizenship and self esteem. Students must be in grades 6-8 and attending Lakeview Schools. Sherry Hill spent 5 years with Operation G.R.A.D. where she served as Program Director for Junior Achievement, but her involvement with the students was much greater than her role with Junior Achievement. Sherry became a voice for many of the students and a sounding board for those students who needed a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. This scholarship was established to honor her memory and her contributions to the Battle Creek Community on behalf of young people. Eligible candidates are individuals that have attended Operation Grad or graduating seniors of Operation Grad or similar high school alternative programs that provide an opportunity for student success that is not provided through a "typical high school" educational program. Considerations are: academic performance, motivation and character and financial need. Scholarship applications may also be obtained through Junior Achievement and counselors at area high schools.

An emphasis will be placed on selecting applicants attending Western Michigan University?s College of Aviation. Eligible applicants are graduating seniors of Calhoun County area high schools who will be pursuing a degree in aviation, science-related and engineering studies.

Through the combined efforts of the Climax Rotary Club and some other local individuals, the memory of a little girl with a gentle smile and kind heart, Breanne Blodgett, will live on each year through this fund beginning in the year 2010, the year Breanne would have graduated. Breanne, who was energetic, loving and full of life, will be remembered as a little hero that touched eight people's lives with the donation of her organs after her untimely death. Eligible applicants of this scholarship are graduating seniors from Climax-Scotts High School. Students should demonstrate potential to succeed in college curriculum to be pursued. Considerations are: Applicants should be involved in some form of community service and/or any extra curricular activity at school and of good moral character. Battle Creek area high school juniors and seniors, CACC, and home schooled students who reside in the local district are eligible to apply. The Roosevelt Scholarship was established to honor teamwork and positive team dynamics as important skills for working successfully in corporate America and community organizations. The Roosevelts believe effective teamwork behaviors can provide young people with tools to accomplish greater achievements. Applicants are required to form a team of 3 eligible students and work to complete one team project assignment. The assignment is to create a proposal for a community project following the application instructions, all while leveraging teamwork. Working as a team is most often fun and rewarding, so give it a try! For candidate consideration, scholarship applicants must complete the assignment. One scholarship will be awarded annually with each member of the team receiving an award.

Individuals who are considered a minority by race or representation in the Police Officer Profession. This scholarship is available for graduates or graduating seniors from the Battle Creek area who are seeking educational opportunities in the Kellogg Community College Police Academy in order to become a Police Officer. The Battle Creek area is defined as residents or schools providing diplomas or other graduating equivalency in the townships of Pennfield, Emmett, Bedford and the cities of Springfield and Battle Creek. Students should demonstrate potential to succeed in the Police Academy Program. Financial need, character, volunteer involvement, leadership and commitment to community will also be considered. For the purpose of this scholarship, minority will be defined as African American, Hispanic, Female or other populations which are under-represented in the Police Officer Profession.

In 1995, the renaming of the Youth Alliance Committee Scholarship recognized Dr. Russell G. and Ruth E. Mawby's dedication and commitment to the youth of our community. Like the honorees, the Youth Alliance Committee members are dedicated to improving the quality of life of their fellow youth in the Battle Creek Community. Applicants are to be Battle Creek area high school graduating seniors with a commitment to community, participation in activities that help or serve others, and active involvement in the community. Financial need is not criteria for this award.

William E. Boards, Jr. offered his time, talent and support to help build a better community throughout his career as an educator, businessman, and community leader. This scholarship was established as a tribute to William E.Boards Jr.'s accomplishments and support of the educational goals of others who reflect his values in caring for others. Eligible recipients will be minorities that are graduating seniors of Battle Creek area public high schools, or non-traditional college students residing within the Battle Creek area who have been living independently from parents. While financial need will be considered, recipients (both graduating seniors and non-traditional college students) will have portrayed the values of William E. Boards, Jr. which include: education, individuals needing a ''chance'' or ''helping hand'' to develop their full potential; and service, having demonstrated service to, or caring for others (within family, neighborhood, church, etc.). Consideration will be given to individuals who have demonstrated that they are making a positive change in the direction of their life. Graduating seniors must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

This scholarships provides funds to descendents of W.K. Kellogg High School graduates who seek educational opportunities beyond high school. Eligible applicants will have completed one year of college, or if attending a trade school, the scholarship may be applied to the first year. Recipients must be direct descendants of the W. K. Kellogg High School alumni. Scholarship applications are available through members of the W. K. Kellogg High School Alumni Association.

Thomas, "Mr. T," was a beloved and respected Principal of Lakeview High School for 32 years and symbolized honesty, responsiblity, integrity and the importance of education in and out of the classroom. Applicants are to be graduating seniors of Lakeview High School, who exhibit citizenship, leadership perseverance and effort; above average grades; perfect or near-perfect attendance; participation in extracurricular activities and financial need. This scholarship was established in loving memory of Robert L. Nendorf by family and friends. Rob was a 1964 graduate of Comstock High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1966, served a tour of duty in Vietnam and earned a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in battle. Scholarships in memory of Robert will be awarded to veterans, disabled veterans, and children of veterans.

Battle Creek area high school graduating seniors or graduates planning to pursue a nursing degree, with applicants attending Kellogg Community College receiving first preference. Evidence of desire to become a nurse, likelihood of potential success, evidence of appropriate temperament as a nurse, compassionate in nature, satisfactory academic performance of 2.5 GPA or higher. Emphasis should remain on the candidate's interest in returning to the Battle Creek community to live and work.

Dr. Prasadaro and Lakshmi Koneru established this scholarship to honor their son, Satish Koneru, who died in 1985 at age 23. Satish was a graduate of Kimball High School in Royal Oak, Michigan. He attended Oakland University and was a student at Kellogg Community College. Satish is remembered as a considerate and compassionate young man who understood so much about his own life. Even during the most difficult moments of his illness, he was able to unselfishly reflect on the love of his family, expressing his thoughts to a friend who would pass them along after his death. Eligible applicants are graduating seniors with a physical limitation or disability from a Battle Creek area public high school with a minimum 3.0 GPA and financial need, who are pursuing educational opportunities at a (2) year or (4) year college or trade school anywhere in the United States. Considerations are: financial need, and demonstration of a desire to succeed and a strong motivation for achieving personal goals.

Noreen Keaton loved Michigan State University-all aspects-from academics to sports. She was extremely proud of MSU's high rankings within the academic world and the broad range of quality educational opportunities offered by the University. Noreen maintained a high level of awareness of the various disciplines offered at MSU. She always was highly motivated to pay back, in some way, for the outstanding education experienced and the wonderful growing-up and social environment that was provided at MSU. She truly wanted the same for all students who have that burning desire to learn and grow. Frances Minges Delmerico Issac implemented this scholarship in recognition of the 150+ years the family has resided and was active in the Lakeview area. She served many years as chairperson of the English department and also as a high school counselor. Applicants must be Lakeview High School graduating seniors or graduate of Lakeview High School who exhibit evidence of good character and citizenship, industry and effort; ability as indicated by test data and high school grades; intention to pursue a career in an area of Communications (English, Drama, Journalism, etc). Hazel Norman Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Juliee T. Hazel Norman. Throughout her life, Juliee served in positions of leadership at school, church dance, college, career, and community. Juliee is listed in the Who?s Who Among High School Students. The scholarship is awarded annually to students selected from the Honor Guard Program at Harper Creek High School. Honor Guard members display a constructive attitude and respectful behavior toward everyone. Eligible applicants shall be graduating seniors from Harper Creek High School. Candidates must show evidence of volunteerism in the community and leadership.

This scholarship is given in memory of Judi Dolezal who directed the Student Service Center at Lakeview High School from 1994 to 1998. Judi died of leukemia on June 23, 1999. In her short time at LHS, her infectious laugh and refreshing zest for life were often a brilliant shining light for may students. Judi could see and bring out the good in everyone she worked with. She dearly loved her job and the students at Lakeview High School. Lakeview High School graduating seniors. Mr. Allen was a highly respected English teacher at Battle Creek Central High School from 1926 to 1936. Mr. Allen loved music and dramatics and often traveled to New York and Europe to see top programs. He died on September 18, 1986, and left the major portion of his estate to the Battle Creek Community Foundation to be used for scholarships. Applicants must be Battle Creek area public high school graduating seniors. Considerations include: character and citizenship, industry and effort, test data and grades received in high school.

As a Battle Creek native, Jake Westrick is remembered as a man who was dependable and reliable. He was employed by Clark Equipment Company for more than 27 years. Mr. Westrick believed that he must bring value to his work, and that his work, and others, should be characterized as being of high quality. To perpetuate his memory and the values for which he stood, his son, Howard, established the Jake and Howard Westrick Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Higdon Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Sharon Gawlak in honor of her parents, Maude and Harold Higdon. Sharon's parents were life-long residents of Battle Creek who exemplified a strong work ethic. Sharon continued the family value by obtaining her college degree and serving as a teacher at Northwestern Junior High School for 30 years. Recipients of the Higdon Memorial Scholarship will exemplify this same commitment as this family has to their profession. The Davidson Family Scholarship was established to honor the commitment to education and service to the Battle Creek community of Harry and Helen Davidson. Harry served as the Superintendent of the Battle Creek Public Schools for a number of years, and upon his retirement, became the first Executive Director of the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Much of Harry and Helen's work in this community can be exemplified today through the development of our fine educational system, the growth of our Community Foundation, and a strong community of value for the education of our young people. Eligible applicants are Battle Creek Central High School graduating seniors planning to attend Kellogg Community College or Michigan State University. Academic achievement, involvement in community and neighborhood activities, some consideration for financial need.

In May 1994, the President of the Harper Creek Optimist Club authorized the establishment of a scholarship fund to be awarded to graduating seniors from Harper Creek High School. Doris Klaussen was a special education pioneer, founder of Goodwill Industries, and Principal of Ann J. Kellogg School for 25 years. Under Klaussen's leadership, Ann J. was the first elementary school in the United States to mainstream special education students. She passed way on January 30, 1998, at the age of 100. The Reverend Clifton V. Bullock came to Battle Creek in 1976 as Pastor of Washington Heights United Methodist Church and built the new Washington Heights United Methodist Church and Community Ministries. Reverend Bullock is remembered as an individual who promoted among youth the value of taking responsibility for your own life, getting an education, and helping your community. The Clifton V. Bullock Minority Education Endowment Fund was established by the Kellogg Company in 1991 as a tribute to the work and life of Rev. Bullock. The purpose of the fund is to advance the educational opportunities for minority people in the Battle Creek area. Battle Creek area high school minority graduating seniors and adults (separate application for adults). Academic performance, financial need, service to community are the criteria for this scholarship.

The Christa Ferree Scholarship Fund was established in 1992 by the family and friends of Christa Ferree, who was a student at Harper Creek High School until her untimely death in 1991. She played baseball, was a cheerleader, served as Vice President of her class, and enjoyed long bike rides. Most special to Christa were stray animals that easily found their way to her home. Applicant must be a female graduating senior of Harper Creek High School. Financial need (determined by Federal Guidelines), citizenship, strong desire to continue education beyond high school, creativity, ambition and initiative.

The Randolph?s established this scholarship to encourage and support students who want to pursue educational opportunities after graduation from Battle Creek Central High School. Throughout the years, their parents, Bernard and Marguerite Angood and K.L. This scholarship was established to honor Allyn Miller and his 37 years of dedication to Harper Creek Community Schools, where he served as an outstanding teacher, counselor and administrator. Eligible candidates are graduating seniors of Harper Creek High School who will be attending the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University, or Grand Valley State University. Preference may be given to those pursuing a career in education, health sciences, or engineering.
