Description
The Fund was established for the purpose of providing scholarships to residents of Calhoun County who are graduates or graduating seniors seeking educational opportunities beyond high school. Eligible applicants shall reside in Calhoun County and be graduates or graduating seniors who graduate with a diploma, or its equivalent and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. If an applicant has a GPA below 2.5 upon graduation from high school, they must provide a written statement that outlines their plan for succeeding in college and overcoming obstacles. Selection will be based on the applicant(s) demonstrated leadership skills and involvement in their community as well as financial need.

BCCF Scholarship Application

Description
Those whose lives he positively touched through the years describe Judge Shelton ?Cosmo? Penn as fair in the courtroom, kind, compassionate, understanding, and a good man who treated everyone with dignity and respect. Shelton C. Penn graduated from high school in 1942, attended Morehouse College, was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving from 1944-1946 and returned to Morehouse to graduate in 1948 (his schoolmate was Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.). Judge Penn graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1951, set up a private practice in Battle Creek, Michigan and went on to an illustrious career in law that included chief assistant prosecuting attorney, civil rights hearing referee and chief judge of the 10th district court. This fund, established in memory of Judge Penn by his wife, Sadie Penn in 2009, is a testament to their belief in education and community. This fund was established for the purpose of providing scholarships to Calhoun County residents who are students entering the University of Michigan Law School to pursue a career in law. Eligible applicants shall be gsraduates or graduating seniors from Calhoun County private, public, parochial, charter school systems or home school. Graduate students must have at least the minimum required grade point average for acceptance into the University of Michigan Law School. The Shelton C. Penn Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to graduates or graduating seniors, who at the time the scholarship is awarded, are planning to attend the University of Michigan Law School. Considerations are the applicant(s) potential for academic success, service to their community, church involvement and evidence the applicant has been thoughtful and thorough in planning their life path/future.

Description
This fund was established for the purpose of providing scholarships for graduating seniors from Marshall or Harper Creek High Schools pursuing higher education in the business or a technical field. Should there be a lack of eligible candidates from one of the above two schools in any given year, candidates may be selected from one of the other local public schools. This fund was established for the purpose of providing scholarships to graduating seniors from Battle Creek Public Schools who seek educational opportunities beyond high school at Kellogg Community College. Prior recipients can renew award for one year. Recipient must maintain a 2.0 GPA, as verified through a Kellogg Community College transcript, to receive renewable award.

The Memorial Scholarship, established in July 1920 from a variety of gifts to the School District of the City of Battle Creek, has evolved from a student loan program to its current scholarship fund. Over the years, those with a heart for Battle Creek Public Schools and its students have made individual and memorial gifts to this fund. Eligible applicants shall be graduating seniors of Battle Creek Public Schools who seek educational opportunities beyond high school at Kellogg Community College. Candidates must have a 3.0 GPA or better and be in the top 25% of their high school graduating class. This fund was initially established through the vision of two sisters Lela M. Karcher and Elizabeth M. Karcher, a number of scholarship funds were added in an effort to support as many students as possible. The fund has a dual purpose of 1)providing scholarships to graduating seniors from Battle Creek Public Schools who seek educational opportunities beyond high school at Kellogg Community College and, 2)providing scholarships for Battle Creek Public Schools students who attend Kellogg Community College while enrolled as a Battle Creek Public School student. Eligible applicants shall be graduating seniors of Battle Creek Public Schools who will be attending Kellogg Community College or a student(s) enrolled in Battle Creek Public Schools who attends Kellogg Community College. Eligiblity of the student, courses and institiutions are defined under Section 21b of the State School Aid Act, the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act, 1996 PA 160, and the Career and Technical Preparation Act, 2000 PA 258. In addition, criteria as established through Kellogg Community College admissions will apply.

This fund, established in 2009 by friends and colleagues, is a tribute to the life of Kathy Petrich. Kathy Petrich taught for twelve years as Director of Choral Activities for Marshall Public Schools. Prior to teaching in Marshall, she taught for five years in River Rouge, and one year in New Hampshire. Her high school groups consistently earned first division ratings, not only in Michigan, but in national and international competitions, as well. Eligible applicants shall be graduating seniors of Marshall High School who will be pursuing a degree in music. Selection criteria are: applicants who have participated in music (choir, band or orchestra) throughout their high school career, have maintained good grades, and have received recommendations from Marshall High School teachers. Applicants should demonstrate potential to succeed in college curriculum to be pursued. Financial need, character and volunteer involvement may also be considered. This scholarship is a memorial tribute to Earl ?Joe? Brutsche IV who lived the Boy Scout oath and law in his daily life and never hesitated to help a friend regardless of the time of day. Joe was a 2006 graduate of St. Phillip Catholic Central High School where he was the Vice-President of his class for four years. He was also an amazing athlete earning a total of 10 varsity letters in the sports of track, basketball and football. Joe was a Boy Scout and member of Troop #325. He earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light, Eagle Scout and Ad Altare Dei awards. It is hoped that individuals receiving this award will continue to display the same character, dedication and willingness to give as Joe did. Eligible applicants shall be graduating seniors from St. Philip Catholic Central High School who are members in good standing of the girl scouts or boy scouts and active in school activities and athletics. Description
To honor the life and legacy of Ronald Clark "Ron" McDaniel, family and friends established the Ronald Clark McDaniel Memorial Scholarship Fund in 2008. Ron, born in Harlan, Kentucky, moved to Battle Creek, Michigan at the age of 5. He was involved in the National Honor Society, Boys State, played baseball and football and graduated in the top ten of his class at Pennfield High School. He then served in the United States Air Force obtaining presidential awards and honors before he made his home back in Battle Creek. Ron managed to balance his commitment and love for his family and sports while exhibiting an unequaled work ethic, often working 7 days a week, at the same company for 38 years. This fund was established to carry on his value of education. He believed that all young adults should participate in extra-curricular activities in or outside of school while focusing on education. Most of all Ron McDaniel believed education was the key to success. Scholarships in memory of Ron will be awarded to graduating seniors who have participated in high school athletics and are seeking educational opportunities in teaching/education. Eligible candidates shall be graduating seniors from any public school within the greater Battle Creek area who have participated in a minimum of one varsity sport for at least two years of their high school career who will be seeking education at a 2 or 4 year college or university in the field of teaching/education. Graduating seniors must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater. Financial need may also be considered. This scholarship was established to serve as a source of encouragement and support to minority and financially challenged male students in the Battle Creek Public School District. Eligible applicants shall be African American, male, graduating seniors from Battle Creek Central High School. Considerations are: demonstrated service to community, church and/or family, evidence of ability to succeed academically in a college or technical institution, and financial need. Scholarship priority will be given to participants in the Urban League of Battle Creek's "Boys to Men" program or its successor, whenever applicable. Description
Believing in the power of higher education, this scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of Ann. Ann Platusic was born in Alberta, Canada and was naturalized as an American in 1949. Ann worked for Michigan Carton Company for 10 years and the Kellogg Company for 31 years until her retirement in 1970. In retirement she enjoyed working as a beautician in a salon above the former Speaker Pharmacy. Eligible applicants shall be graduating high school seniors of the greater Battle Creek area who have been accepted to a four-year college or university with the intent of studying toward as occupational-oriented bachelor's degree. Note: An occupational-oriented degree is "those that prepare students for employment in a specific occupational area." Examples include business, health, and computer science. Academic majors are considered to be all other majors not geared towards specific careers, such as social sciences and humanities.

Jacqueline Pieper has provided scholarships to students with potential but who needed economic assistance to continue their education. Eligible applicants shall be graduating seniors or graduates of a public or private high school of the Battle Creek area or have obtained a GED. Applicants must be planning to enroll at a two or four year college or university or trade school or similar learning institution. Financial need is the most critical consideration. Preference will be given to residents or former residents of the Lakeview School District. Special consideration shall also be given to former students of Jacqueline Pieper or their children.

This scholarship is for children or grandchildren of Pennfield retirees, current employees with at least 5 years experience, or a former employee with at lease 5 years of experience who is a Michigan Public School Retiree, who are seeking educational opportunities beyond high school. These opportunities shall include: accredited colleges, universities or technical/trade schools. Eligible applicants will be: a graduating senior from any accredited high school or a current enrollee in higher education, of good moral character, demonstrate evidence of community service, and have attained a 3.0 GPA or above. The Kellogg Company-Tony McGee Scholarship is specifically to support scholarships for minority students who seek educational opportunities beyond high school. Priority consideration will be given first to historically black colleges, second to four year Michigan colleges and third to Kellogg Community College. Scholarship candidates shall be minority graduating seniors of Battle Creek Central High School with a 2.8 GPA or higher. Considerations are: financial need and academic achievement. Minority students shall include but not be limited to African American, Latino, and others.

Urban League of Battle Creek Scholarship Application

Description
The Calhoun County Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) was established in 1923, with four objectives: 1) to promote greater interest in legislation affecting retired school employees; 2) to furnish a practical basis for united action among those devoted to the cause of public education; 3) to support in every way possible the MARSP and the American Association of Retired Persons, NRTA Division; and 4) to promote voluntary participation by its members in civic and educational affairs. This scholarship was established for the purpose of providing scholarships to relatives of the current membership of the Calhoun County Chapter of the MARSP who seek educational opportunities beyond high school. Description
Steven P. Straub, "Straubie" was a 1981 graduate of Lakeview High School, former Jr. Varsity Football Coach, Assistant Track Coach and In-House Suspension Supervisor. He played four years of basketball and football, three years of track and one year of baseball at Lakeview High School. Steve loved all sports and made many friends while participating. He understood the importance of teamwork and savored the thrill of competition. Steve was compassionate, loving and fun, and known for his infectionus smile. In Steve's memory, his family, co-workers and friends established this fund to provide annual scholarships (up to two) for Sports Camps for high school students. The Davidson Family Scholarship was established to honor the commitment to education and service to the Battle Creek community of Harry and Helen Davidson. Harry served as the Superintendent of the Battle Creek Public Schools for a number of years, and upon his retirement, became the first Executive Director of the Battle Creek Community Foundation. Much of Harry and Helen's work in this community can be exemplified today through the development of our fine educational system, the growth of our Community Foundation, and a strong community of value for the education of our young people. Description
Barbara and Henrietta Curtis were long-time residents of the Battle Creek community and supporters of the Lakeview Schools. This scholarship was established in memory of them by their family. Eligible applicants must be a resident of the Lakeview School District in Battle Creek, graduating from Lakeview High School or an area district administering the special education program that the student is attending. Student must be a graduating high school senior who is physically or orthopedically challenged in accordance with the definitions set forth in special education rules and regulations of the State of Michigan and plans to attend a two or four-year college or university or accredited institution for post high school studies. Considerations are: potential for success in higher education, achievement oriented and wants to achieve independence, ability to live above the handicap. Description
The ASMO Manufacturing, Inc. scholarship was established to provide scholarships to graduates or graduating seniors from the Battle Creek area seeking educational opportunities beyond high school. Eligible applicants are ASMO Associates' children who are high school graduates or G.E.D. recipients that have a minimum of a 2.5 GPA and who have been accepted in the fall, or students who are already pursuing a full-time course of study at an accredited two (2) or four (4) year college, university, or vocational-technical school. Considerations are: academic achievement, career plans, and involvement in school and community activities.

Description
Arthur Mason Ward, Sr. and Izora Vereachia Ward met at Tennessee State University where they both received their Bachelor's degrees. They moved to Battle Creek in 1955 where they became committed servants to their church, Mr. Zion African Episcopal Methodist Church, and to God. They served faithfully until their passing in 2000 and 1993, respectively. Their mission was to effectively serve in various civic and religious organizations to foster a higher quality of life for their community. This scholarship was established in rememberance of them. Eligible applicants shall be African American graduates or graduating high school seniors from public or private schools in the greater Battle Creek area and have a minimum 2.0 GPA. Considerations are: exhibit strong character and leadership skills and active in service to their church, community and school. Preference shall be given to students who are members of Mt. Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church.

With the knowledge that dreams are nearly impossible to reach without financial support, Arthur and Judith Angood set out to create a scholarship fund in the name of their parents. Throughout the years, their parents, Bernard and Marguerite Angood and K.L. ''Ping'' and Marian Arnold, provided an example through their service to others in their communities of Battle Creek and Flint, which has had a lasting impact on both Art and Judy. They subscribe to the idea that everyone can and should become involved in their school, community, and workplace. Eligible applicants shall be graduates or graduating seniors of Battle Creek Public High Schools that have been accepted to or are attending the University of Michigan. As a civic leader and ambassador for Battle Creek, Anne Schwarz is remembered fondly by many people in the Battle Creek community. As a tribute to her active community involvement, her husband, Senator Joe Schwarz, MD, family, and friends established the Anne E. Schwarz Scholarship Fund at the time of her death in February 1990. Eligible applicants shall be Battle Creek area high school graduating seniors who plan to major in a health science discipline. Considerations shall be: academic achievement with consideration given to financial need.

This scholarship was established to honor Allyn Miller and his 37 years of dedication to Harper Creek Community Schools, where he served as an outstanding teacher, counselor and administrator. Eligible candidates are graduating seniors of Harper Creek High School who will be attending the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University, or Grand Valley State University. After teaching in the Battle Creek School District, including serving as a Grade Principal at Battle Creek Central High School, Al Leibert became an Assistant Principal at Lakeview High School in 1971. He then served as Principal of Westlake Elementary from 1980 to 1986. After retirement he helped coach girls track and freshmen football for ten years. Scholarship applicants must be graduating seniors of Lakeview High School who will be attending an accredited four-year college or university or a two-year community college, who demonstrates good character and citizenship; GPA of at least 3.0; evidence of participation in extracurricular activities.
